Gooding Sheep Song (unknown songwriter, early 1900s?). This song uses the air of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" to rant against unfair practices of big sheepmen and politicians against the small sheepherder. The song specifically targets Frank Gooding and his brothers, who ran a huge operation in south central Idaho. Gooding, born in 1859 in England, immigrated in 1881 and soon controlled large herds and land areas, as well as political power. He was Idaho's governor from 1905-1909 and was U.S. Senator from 1921 til his death in 1928. |
