EARLY IDAHO SONGS OF THE MONTH - December 2011

This song appeared in the book Pioneer Irrigation-Upper Snake River Valley by Kate B. Carter and Clara B. Steele (1955). The song was attributed to the Garfield brothers. E. Bruce Stanger of Iona came up with a plausible melody and contributed his rendition of the song, adding an extra verse of his own.

Teton Ditchdigger Song

(John, Thomas and J. Garfield, ca. 1890)

Pal Pinto and Idaho

(Bob Spritzer, 1922)

Lyrics for this delightful song by eastern Idaho cowboy are from Special Collections at the University of Idaho. The many eastern Idaho placenames in the song are quite familiar to Mindi Reid Palmer, Vince Crofts and Rick McCracken who came up with a suitable melody and recorded the song.
